Hip Replacement

Hip Replacement

The hip is the largest ball-and-socket joint in the body, connecting the thigh bone (femur) to the pelvis (acetabulum). The joint is covered with cartilage for smooth movement and surrounded by synovial fluid to reduce friction.

Common Causes of Hip Pain

  1. Hip Diseases in Childhood – Can affect joint growth and function later in life.
  2. Rheumatoid Arthritis – Autoimmune disease causing joint inflammation and stiffness.
  3. Osteonecrosis (Avascular Necrosis) – Reduced blood supply to the hip leading to bone damage.
  4. Osteoarthritis – Age-related wear and tear causing pain and stiffness, common in people 50+.

When is Hip Replacement Needed?

Severe stiffness that limits leg movement.
Constant pain, even at rest, not relieved by medication.
Difficulty in daily activities like walking and bending.

Pre-Surgery Evaluation

Before surgery, Dr. Nitin Rawal and his expert team at AOSC conduct:
Medical history review (past injuries, chronic conditions).
X-rays & MRI to assess joint damage.
Physical examination to check movement and pain.
Additional tests (blood, urine, ECG, dental check-up) to ensure overall health.

Hip Replacement Surgery – Procedure

Duration: 60–120 minutes

1️⃣ Anesthesia is given (general, spinal, or nerve block).
2️⃣ Damaged bone & cartilage are removed.
3️⃣ Prosthetic parts (ceramic, plastic, or metal) are implanted using cement or screws.

4️⃣ Spacer is placed between the new joint to reduce friction.
5️⃣ Surgical stitches are closed, and the patient is monitored before discharge

Post-Surgery Recovery & Care

🩹 Wound care – Stitches are removed after 15 days, and the area must be kept dry.
💊 Medications – Pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs prescribed.
🥗 Nutritious diet – Iron-rich food for faster recovery.
🚶 Walking support – Cane or walker for a few days; gradual return to daily activities in 1–2 months.
🏋️ Physiotherapy – Helps improve flexibility and movement.
