Clinical Overview
Understanding ACL Injury &
When Surgery is Needed
The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is one of the four primary stabilising ligaments of the knee. It prevents the shin bone from sliding forward and controls rotational movement — making it critical for running, cutting, pivoting and jumping.
ACL tears most commonly occur during sports such as football, cricket, basketball, badminton and martial arts, or through road traffic accidents. Complete tears in athletes almost always require surgical reconstruction.
At AOSC, every patient undergoes thorough clinical evaluation and MRI review before any surgical recommendation is made. Conservative options are always discussed where appropriate.
Common Signs of an ACL Injury
The Surgical Process
How Arthroscopic ACL Reconstruction Works
A minimally invasive procedure through 2–3 portals less than 1cm each. No large incisions. Most patients walk the same day.
Pre-operative Evaluation
MRI review, clinical examination, graft selection and surgical planning personalised to your anatomy and goals.
Arthroscopic Assessment
A small camera inserted through a portal directly visualises the ACL, menisci and cartilage before reconstruction begins.
Graft Harvest & Tunnelling
Graft tendon harvested and bone tunnels precisely drilled at anatomically correct positions to replicate the native ACL.
Fixation & Recovery
Graft secured with interference screws. Walking begins within hours. Physiotherapy starts the next day.
